MU 223: History of African-American Music

This course is a study of the history of African American music from 1619 through the present day. Students focus on the socio-historical context in which popular music, folk music, classical music, and religious music evolved. Topics include the spiritual, blues, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues and contemporary music, as well as women in music.
