The Bachelor of Music in Pedagogy of Music (B.M. in Pedagogy of Music) degree program prepares undergraduate students to become outstanding music instructors who are certified to teach music in schools. Music teachers must demonstrate a high level of skill in both musicianship and teaching; thus, this degree program is designed to create and develop skilled musicians and build strong foundations in pedagogy.
This degree program will provide students with a strong foundation for instructing k-12 music, across a wide array of educational settings and musical contexts. The presented sequence is derived from the theory, research, and practical experiences of faculty within the Music department. Students will also have the choice to specialize in their professional aspirations; as such, students within this degree program can develop a concentration resulting in either instrumental or choral specialization.
Students who complete the B.M. in Pedagogy of Music will be proficient in the following student learning outcomes:
-
Help students develop musical and teaching competencies for necessary application in the classroom setting
-
Enable students to apply the musical and instructional skills developed in the program (reinforced during field experience and student teaching)
-
Help students to develop skills to continue music-making as a lifetime endeavor both personally and professionally.
-
Provide a pathway for alternative certification for teaching music in the k-12 classroom setting.
