OU 101: Freshman Seminar

This course is a general education requirement for all first-year students and any new student entering with less than 30 semester hours of transfer credits. The course provides a meaningful transition for the first-year student to a new social as well as academic and spiritual environment at the College level.

OU 205: Global Service

Credits 2

This course prepares students to be servant leaders in the world through reflective global outreach interactions. It teaches commitment to Seventh-day Adventist ideals of service, benevolence, and community involvement. There are two parts to the course. The first portion is instructional and is conducted in a classroom setting. The second component is international service participation and is conducted in a foreign country.

OU 501: Orientation

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Oakwood University. Students explore the university’s rich legacy, with a focus on key historical figures who have made significant contributions to the African American community and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In addition to this historical and cultural grounding, students develop essential academic and professional skills, including time management, scheduling, and task prioritization to support success throughout the program. The course also includes a brief introduction to Field Education, a core component of the MSW curriculum. Students gain an overview of field placement expectations, hours requirements, and the process for securing placements. Delivered in a convenient format, this orientation sets the foundation for students’ academic journey and professional development in clinical social work practice.
