Instructors do not automatically grant a grade of “I” (Incomplete) to students who are behind in their work at the end of the semester. However, due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, students may request an “I” grade to extend the time to complete course requirements. The Request for Incomplete must be submitted for approval two weeks before the last day of instruction in a term. The procedures are as follows:
-
The student must request an incomplete grade directly from the instructor.
-
The instructor must obtain and complete a “Request and Authorization for Incomplete form.
-
The student must provide a physician’s statement (for medical reasons) or written justification (for non-medical reasons) to accompany the form.
-
The instructor must obtain all required signatures.
-
The department chair must submit the completed form to the academic dean at least five working days prior to the start of final examinations.
An “I” grade will be changed to a regular grade once the outstanding work is completed by the approved deadline. The deadline, set at the instructor’s discretion, may range from a few days up to several weeks but cannot extend beyond the sixth week of the following semester—even if the student is not registered for that semester. If the “I” grade is not resolved within this timeframe, it will automatically convert to an “F.”
If additional time is needed due to ongoing illness or other unavoidable circumstances, the student may request an extension in writing from the Academic Policies Committee before the deadline expires.
