An introductory course for students who have no formal training in language assessment, this course teaches how to assess English language skills, such as listening, speaking, writing, reading, grammar, and vocabulary in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) contexts. The course is both theoretical and practical. Students create a portfolio of assessment instruments based on the principles of validity, reliability, practicality, and beneficial consequences. Students then try out their assessment designs in an English as a second language (ESL) classroom.
