Academic Bankruptcy Policy for Traditional Students

Academic bankruptcy provides a second chance to students who, since their tenure at Oakwood, have proven through their subsequent academic record that they can successfully matriculate through the program. It involves a student's request to retroactively withdraw from one academic term* of study because of personal, emotional, or financial circumstances so devastating that it was impossible for the student to perform at a satisfactory level. (*Fall, Spring, ACE/LEAP, Summer, or Winter Break).

To be considered for academic bankruptcy, the following must be followed:

  • Students must complete the Academic Request Form with appropriate documentation

  • Students must be enrolled at the university to petition for academic bankruptcy

  • Students may not request bankruptcy for a currently enrolled term

  • Students may apply for academic bankruptcy once during their matriculation

  • For consideration, students must request withdrawal from all courses in the given term, even courses for which they earned a passing grade

  • The request must be submitted before the beginning of the student's final term

  • Once the request for academic bankruptcy is approved, the grades for all courses taken during the term will be changed to “W” (withdrawn) with a notation of academic bankruptcy (B)

A successful petition for academic bankruptcy has no retroactive effect on any academic determinations made prior to bankruptcy, including but not limited to academic probation, suspension, or dismissal; determinations of ineligibility to pursue application to upper division/professional phase of academic programs; Dean’s List eligibility; financial aid eligibility; or tuition liability. A student with bankrupted coursework is eligible for graduation and other honors which are based on cumulative GPA.
